MATHEMATICS LIBRARY

Organizations of Library:

If there is no provision of a departmental library, there should be a separate section in the central or say a general library of the school for mathematics. The whole section of the mathematics library can be divided into the following parts . It is better if the mathematics library is divided into different sections and each section is provided with a different types of books. Some of the suggested books for a mathematics library are:

  • Textbooks
  • General books.
  • Reference books.
  • Inspiration books.
  • Practical books.
  • Background books.
  • Popular mathematics books
  • Mathematical magazine and Journals.

Textbooks:

For any subject the textbook is very important. There should be provision of all the textbooks related to mathematics for each class of the school according to prescribed.

General Books:

Books giving general information are related to the subject matter e.g. Book of general knowledge containing information of day-to-day happening and discoveries.

Reference Books:

The books, which are directed for further study. Tables of constants, logarithms, Books containing mathematical terms in other languages, mathematics dictionaries etc.

Inspirational Books: (books on recreations and amusement)

The books, which inspires for teaching and learning. For example wonder of mathematics, puzzles in mathematics, tricks in mathematics, magic of mathematics etc.

·       Gamow, “Puzzles in mathematics” – Macmillan

·       Northop, “Riddles in mathematics” – Van Nostrand

Practical Books:

Book, which provide with the detailed information of experiments. For example books containing particular utility of learnt mathematical facts, figures and principles.

Background books:

It gives the information about the historical development of notation system, metric system. Historical development of different branches of mathematics biographies of the great mathematicians.

Popular mathematics books:

Popular mathematics containing latest ideas about the discoveries and invention in the field of mathematics.
